In the heart of New York you’ll find the Museum of Modern Art. Established in 1939, the museum identifies as one of the world’s largest and most influential contemporary art meccas, hosting masterpieces from some of the grand masters, including Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gough, Claude Monet and Salvador Dali.
In 2019, the museum underwent an extensive refurbishment led by architects, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with Gensler, to expand exhibition space by 30% and rethink how visitors experience art in the museum.
As part of the $450 million renovation, the museum sought to upgrade their washroom facilities. With such a large volume and variety of visitors flocking to the museum daily, the architects were tasked with finding attractive and resilient solutions, including a statement cubicle to convey the sophisticated grandeur of this celebrated American landmark.
Ticking boxes on the architect’s specification was the striking and timeless design of Unity toilet cubicles. The sleek flush fronts float, courtesy of setback satin anodised pedestals, allow for a low 50mm floor clearance to ensure user privacy.
These cutting-edge cubicle stalls were manufactured in 18mm thick High Pressure Laminate, a confident impact, scratch, heat and moisture resistant material, ideal for high intensity spaces. The flush door and pilasters mean that cleaning can be achieved effortlessly and quickly thanks to the smooth, moisture resistant surface.
The architects were keen to identify a cubicle solution to keep washroom traffic moving, which led to Venesta providing stainless steel cubicle door hinges, set to stay open at 10 degrees for the convenience of identifying vacant stalls.
Unity’s minimal, clean lined look has earned itself a worldwide reputation as the optimal cubicle solution, in some of the most renowned buildings and business practices, due to its ability to adapt and blend whilst still making a big impact; much like in the style of modern art.
