Portsmouth Historic Quarter

The trust set out with the objective of showcasing the local history throughout the facilities in a unique way. They wanted to turn the walls of the washroom into a historic celebration of the local history as a unique display visitors can ‘stumble’ across in the unofficially most visited facilities on the grounds. We worked alongside Portsmouth Royal Dockyard Historical Trust to fulfil the project requirements outlined in the brief and bring their vision to life with family-friendly, durable yet stylish washroom solutions.

The client opted for a colour palette that reflected the historic grounds, with our pre-plumbed panelling, Vepps specified in our ‘Teal’ laminate representing the hues of the sea, blended with our ‘Dark Walnut’ laminate for the cubicles, which embodies the deep walnut tones that have a long-standing association with boats.

The handwashing facilities needed to ensure a regulated traffic flow was achieved to prevent users from waiting to wash their hands. Our WT2 Solid Surface washtroughs in ‘Alabastar’ were specified in a custom length to fit the designated area perfectly, maximising the total amount of taps to allow multiple users at one time. Underpanels were also specified in ‘Teal’ to keep duct spaces secure and prevent vandalism.

This washroom completion demonstrates how considered product specification and sensitive design can enhance visitor facilities within a historic setting. The new washrooms at Portsmouth Historic Quarter combine robust, high-performance materials with a carefully curated aesthetic inspired by the surrounding maritime heritage, resulting in inclusive, family-friendly facilities that deliver durability, efficiency and a memorable visitor experience.
