A holistic modern restroom design that ensures maximum privacy.

“We love our new office space …thank you for helping us make it better than we could have hoped for”
- Kai-Uwe Bergmann, Partner, BIG

The Project.

BIG, Bjarke Ingels Group, is a Copenhagen, New York, London and Barcelona based group of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape professionals, interior and product designers, researchers and inventors.

After outgrowing their old space, Bjarke Ingels made the decision to relocate the company to Brookyln, where he purchased a waterfront penthouse in DUMBO, New York City's premier arts district.

A complete renovation took place over a six month period to transform the new space. Kai-Uwe Bergmann, one of the firm’s partners, described the design as a “holistic” approach with much of the furniture and lighting designed by BIG.

The Challenge.

Never was it more important that the quality of our restroom design and functionality matched up to our client’s vision.

“The visual excitement and physical proximity to downtown Manhattan combined with DUMBO’s artistic spirit and access to public spaces feels like our native Copenhagen. It is as Scandimerican as any place I can think of”, he said. “We wanted all of our spaces to feel generous”.

The renovation project included revamping the office restrooms, with a design that would incorporate that “Scandimerican” feel; minimalist and simple. Our focus was to modernise the infrastructure and provide first-rate amenities for their 250 employees.

The Solution.

Unity’s simple design effortlessly met the brief. The clean lines and a floating appearance of the toilet stalls made an instant impact with the modern feel they were looking for.

Specified in Iceberg and matched with stainless steel fittings, the result was a high quality, durable restroom. The full height stalls, and a floor clearance of just 50mm, ensured maximum privacy with a discreet emergency access provision for added safety.

The finish included faucets designed by BIG for Kallista, a luxury sanitaryware company, and the checkerboard tiles remained from the original building. Old and new beautifully combined.
Venesta are delighted to have been involved with this fantastic project. A nostalgic black and white restroom colour scheme brought right up to date with modern style and functionality.
