With over 40 galleries to explore displaying art, applied art, social history, archaeology and ethnography, the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is a fantastic place to visit. It houses part of the largest Pre-Raphaelite painting collection in the world and offers a series of changing exhibitions throughout the year.

With so much going on, foot traffic is not surprisingly very heavy so the gallery decided it was time for a washroom upgrade to accommodate their many visitors.

The Challenge

A Grade II listed landmark building located in the heart of Birmingham City Centre, The Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG) is a world class museum which first opened its doors in 1885. As well as accommodating a high volume of visitors daily, the BMAG also offers regular Venue Hire. Due to their previous washrooms looking washed out and tired, the BMAG needed sturdy new washroom facilities that were built to last and suitable for use by all visitors; from babies and small children, to adults and disabled customers.

“The project was to transform a number of the public toilets with new cubicles and sanitaryware. Due to the nature of their use and location, we wanted something which was easy to clean, looked smart but would withstand the changes in fashion."

Coral Lewis, Facilities Support Officer, Birmingham Museums Trust

Venesta’s Quantum cubicles were specified for all phases of the washrooms development, along with solid surface vanity units and V-epps Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) panelling systems with pre-plumbed SanCeram sanitaryware.
With a sculpted headrail and a sleek floating appearance, our Quantum cubicle range sets the benchmark for washrooms. Fittings are available in a choice of Light Grey or Dark Grey ABS and stainless steel, with doors, pilasters and partitions available in 36 colours, giving you complete flexibility. Our Quantum cubicles are available in MFC, HPL and SGL, meaning that the flexibility doesn’t end with the colour. Quantum SGL cubicles are extremely resistant to impact and also totally impervious to water, the perfect washroom solution for environments with a heavy traffic flow, such as the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery.
Our revolutionary, fully engineered V-epps panelling system meant installation was quick and easy, with panel heights varying to comply with the listed status of the building. The SanCeram sanitaryware was pre-fitted and tested in our factory, meaning that the V-epps panels could be click-fixed into place in no time at all. High strength linear-bearing hinges provide smooth movement and allow panels to be positioned at different heights, so maintenance of the washroom facilities couldn’t be simpler.

"The advice and guidance given by a member of the team at Venesta was very helpful. With the help of Venesta we have transformed our toilets and we are very pleased with the cubicles and sanitaryware provided.”

Coral Lewis, Facilities Support Officer, Birmingham Museums Trust

At Venesta it is alway our aim to work as closely with our customers as possible in order to achieve the perfect washroom solution. This was certainly the case for the BMAG and enabled us to deliver not only great looking new washrooms but ones which will stand the test of time for years to come.

We were extremely proud to be part of the development of such an iconic and timeless building.
